The refining head that takes out the scratch the coarse pass left

A hexagonal segment block is a finer diamond grinding head used after the coarse pass. It removes the directional scratch the coarse segments leave without closing the concrete back up, so a thin epoxy coating goes onto a flat, evenly keyed surface and grinder marks do not show through it.

The coarse pass opens the slab and leaves its own damage behind: a ploughed surface with a directional scratch in it. This head takes that out without closing the profile back up.

A hexagonal segment block, quick-change onto the same head, run at ninety degrees to the last coarse pass.

Why it matters on a thin film

On a 2 mm decorative floor there is not enough material to bury a coarse scratch. It telegraphs: it comes through the finished surface as faint circles you only see when the light rakes across the floor from a door or a window, which is exactly when people look at floors.

On a 6 mm industrial mortar it matters much less, and we say so rather than charge for a pass nobody will ever see.

Where we stop

This is a refining head, not a polish. We are not trying to make the concrete look good; it is about to disappear under resin. We are trying to make it flat and evenly keyed, and then we stop.

What to ask

Ask what grit the slab will be left at, and why that grit. A contractor who has one answer for every floor is not reading your floor.

Questions people ask

Why do grinder swirl marks show through an epoxy floor?

A thin coating follows the surface underneath it. Deep, curved scratches from a coarse grind are not filled by a 2 mm film, so they read through as faint circles when light rakes across the floor. A finer refining pass before priming takes them out.

Does every epoxy floor need a fine grinding pass?

No. It matters most under thin, glossy systems such as decorative and solid-colour epoxy. A thick mortar screed or urethane cement buries a coarse scratch, so an extra refining pass there adds time without changing the finished floor.

Is refining concrete before epoxy the same as polishing it?

No. Polished concrete is ground through grit after grit until it shines. Before resin the aim is the opposite: a flat surface that is still open enough for the primer to grip. Grinding stops at the grit that removes the scratch and keeps the profile.
