Paddle Mixer for Epoxy Resin Flooring
Forced-action paddle mixer
Two minutes that decide the next ten years
A forced-action paddle mixer is a slow, high-torque drill with a helical paddle, used to combine epoxy resin and hardener fully without whipping air into them. Correct mixing (the right ratio, time and speed, with the pail scraped and decanted) is what makes a floor cure hard all the way through.
Epoxy is two parts that have to become one. Resin and hardener are supplied in a ratio that is not negotiable, and mixed for a time that is not negotiable either, at a speed low enough not to whip air into a film you are about to lay two millimetres thick.
Four hundred rpm, two minutes, sides and base scraped with a flat blade, then decanted into a clean pail and mixed again briefly.
The decant is the part people skip
Unmixed material clings to the wall and the bottom corner of the first pail no matter how carefully it was stirred. Pour straight from that pail onto the floor and you pour the unmixed material with it.
Decanting into a second clean pail leaves it behind. It takes fifteen seconds and it is the single most skipped step in resin flooring.
What a mixing failure looks like
Not a stain. A patch, usually a soft one, that stays slightly tacky or prints under a heel, and it does not appear on day one. It appears somewhere around month three, when the rest of the floor has hardened and that patch has not.
It cannot be repaired in place. It is cut out and re-poured, and the repair shows.
Without itSoft patches that never cure. They are invisible on day one and obvious by month three.
What to ask
Ask how long each pail gets mixed and whether it is decanted. Anyone who has actually done this work has a number ready.
Where it is used
Day 02 of the job, the pour, on every system we lay: decorative epoxy, flake floors, urethane cement, quartz broadcast, heavy industrial and repairs & recoats.
Questions people ask
Why does an epoxy floor have soft or sticky patches?
The most common cause is incomplete mixing. Resin and hardener left unmixed on the sides or base of the pail are poured out with the rest and never cure. A wrong ratio or a very cold slab can do the same. The patch has to be cut out and relaid.
How long should epoxy flooring resin be mixed?
For the time the manufacturer gives on the data sheet, which for many flooring systems is two to three minutes at low speed, with the sides and base scraped. Mixing longer or faster does not help: it adds heat, shortens the working time and pulls air in.
What does decanting epoxy mean?
Pouring the mixed resin into a second, clean pail and mixing it briefly again. It leaves behind the unmixed material that clings to the walls and corners of the first pail, so none of it reaches the floor.
